Legal loophole to feed Ukraine with Russian Gas?

Even as Russia can bypass Ukraine and send supplies through Nord Stream into Germany, Germany, using the pipelines connecting Czech Republic and Slovakia can pump this same gas to Ukraine!

Last year, when the ousted President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych met with Putin, one of the prime reasons that worked out in favour of Ukraine abandoning or shelving enhanced association with EU was a sweetened gas deal. 

In addition to a credit line of $15 billion, Russia also promised Ukraine natural gas at discount rates. But the Yanukovych initiative to shelve EU engagement agreement caused popular unrest which finally led to his ousting.

The rest of the story is bound to end up in historical text books.

Now with Russian gas monopoly Gazprom threatening to cut supplies on non-payment of dues to the tune of $2.35 bn by Ukraine has sent shiver down the spine of Ukrainian winter. However, reports suggest that Ukraine having already stepped up its imports from Russia has four months of gas supplies in its store. 

Besides, Germany may emerge as a strong contender in supplying gas to Ukraine.

“In an emergency, the flow through Europe's pipelines could simply be reversed, with gas getting pumped from German reservoirs through the Czech Republic and Slovakia directly to Ukraine. Following this year's especially mild winter, Germany's reservoirs are much fuller than usual. Even long-term deliveries would be conceivable at the moment,” Spiegel Online noted in an article.
